We found about 200 linear feet of salvaged redwood siding (nails removed) for 47 cents per foot at the Reuse Store in Oakland. After another round of rip-cutting, planing and applying coats of Penofin, Brian installed the rainscreen siding on the north wall that faces the garage's rear patio. This wall is also a door to the mechanical room (see door photo).
Brian framed the double door out of our cheap 2x6 spruce wood which he sandwiched between plywood (with insulation in the middle). The mechanical room is only 7 feet by 3 feet, so the double door will allow easy acces to the big hot water boiler/tank (for the radiant heat and domestic hot water) and all the manifolds for the three zones of radiant tubing. When closed, the door appears integrated with the house and the patio feels less like an access pad for the mechanical room and more like a place to hang out.
